What a ZTL is

ZTL stands for Zona a Traffico Limitato, a limited-traffic zone: a part of the historic centre where, at certain hours, only residents and permit holders may drive in. There is no barrier: there is a white sign with a red circle and, almost always, a camera reading number plates.

If you drive in while it is in force, the fine is automatic: roughly 80–100 euros for each entry, and with a rental car it arrives months later with the rental company's handling fee added. Hotels inside the zone can register their guests' plates: ask before you arrive.

The simple rule: park outside the historic centre and walk. It is also the best way to see it.

How complete this map is

Today there are 9 zones and 212 time-restricted streets — the ones OpenStreetMap volunteers have mapped (data as of September 8, 2026). If a historic centre does not appear here, it does not mean it has no ZTL: Taormina, Cefalù, Noto and others are still missing from the data. The sign on the spot always prevails. Town councils can send us the official perimeter and hours and we will add them.
