    Going up Etna

    • Up to 2,500 m you walk freely. Above, only with a volcanological guide; above 2,900 m only in guided groups, with helmets.
    • Limits change with the activity. The day’s ordinance is known by the guides and the refuges: ask before you go.
    • It is cold up there even in August: jacket, water, a torch and closed shoes.
    • Ash and gas can arrive suddenly. If the guide says go down, you go down.
    • Mountain rescue is called through 112: say you are on Etna and at what altitude.
