Dattilo is a hamlet of Paceco, near Trapani, and would have no reason to be a destination if it were not for the cannolo: people driving from Palermo to Trapani leave the motorway on purpose.
The story begins in 1976, when Scolastica Gioia, from Castellammare del Golfo, opened a small bar in the hamlet with her husband Gaspare Poma. The business lasted only a year, but that is where the Dattilo cannolo was born: a shell worked for a long time until it is as thin as a sheet of paper, much bigger than usual, filled in front of the customer with very fresh sheep's milk ricotta, barely sweetened, and chocolate drops. The ricotta comes from the milk of sheep grazing freely in the surrounding countryside.
In fifty years it has become one of the most photographed foods of the island, and Dattilo one of Sicily's cannolo capitals. The Pro Loco runs the Dattilo Cannolo Fest: in 2026 from 3 to 5 July.
