Skiing on Etna

Europe’s highest active volcano keeps snow on its slopes for a good part of the winter, and you ski it looking at the Ionian sea. Two areas work the mountain from opposite sides — Nicolosi on the south, Piano Provenzana on the north — and neither of them feels like an Alpine resort, which is the point.

The season is short and never the same twice: the mountain decides, not the calendar. Ask before you book flights.

A day on skis and an afternoon at sea level is a normal Sicilian Saturday — the coast is under an hour away.

Off the pistes, guides run ski touring and snowshoe days on lava fields that were fire a few winters ago.
